How to get more Google reviews for your Gulf business without breaking Google's rules
Reviews help customers choose you. Google says incentives for reviews are strictly prohibited. Here is how to ask the right way, reply well and keep a steady routine.
Reviews help new customers decide, and Google says the number of reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. For a Gulf business, a steady flow of honest reviews is one of the most useful things you can build. This guide covers what Google allows and a simple routine your team can follow. It is part of our series on Google Business Profile for Gulf businesses.
1. Know the one rule you must not break
Google says reviews must reflect a genuine experience. Offering incentives, such as free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for posting a review, changing a review or removing a negative review is considered fake and misleading content and is strictly prohibited. Google also lists policy-violation restrictions for profiles that break this. So no "review for a discount", no gift for five stars, and no asking customers to delete a bad review in return for a refund.
2. Make it easy to leave a review
Google lets you create a review link or QR code from your Business Profile on a computer. Its help page suggests adding the link to receipts, thank-you emails and the end of a chat, or printing the QR code and displaying it in your shop. Google also notes you can send the request by email, WhatsApp message or Facebook post. WhatsApp is widely used in the Gulf, so a short thank-you message with the link after a job is done is a natural fit.
Customers must be signed in to a Google Account to leave a review. They can set one up with a non-Gmail email address.
3. Reply to every review
Google says replies show customers that their feedback matters. Its tips for replies:
- Be professional and polite.
- Keep it short and simple.
- Do not send the same "thank you" to everyone. Add a helpful detail or answer a question where you can.
- Be conversational, not promotional. Avoid offering deals in a reply.
- Reply in a timely manner.
4. Handle negative reviews calmly
Google says negative reviews are not necessarily a sign of poor practice and are a chance to understand what customers expect. A mix of positive and negative feedback often feels more trustworthy. Google's advice for a negative review:
- Never share the reviewer's private information or attack them personally.
- Apologise when it is appropriate, and be honest about what you can and cannot do.
- Address the reviewer by name and refer to what they said.
- If the matter is complex, invite them to contact you by phone or email to solve it privately.
If a review breaks Google's content policies, you can flag it for Google to check. Do not ask the customer to remove it in exchange for something.
5. Arabic and English replies
In the Gulf, reviews may come in Arabic, English or both. A good habit is to reply in the language the reviewer used. Ask a native Arabic speaker to check any Arabic reply before it goes out, so the tone is right. This is a practical habit rather than a Google rule.
A simple weekly routine
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| After each job or sale | Send a thank-you with the review link by WhatsApp or email |
| Every day or two | Check for new reviews and reply |
| Weekly | Note common praise and complaints and share them with the team |
| Monthly | Look at the profile performance numbers in Business Profile |
Red flags
- Anyone offering to sell you reviews.
- A plan that needs you to offer rewards for reviews.
- Copy-paste replies that ignore what the customer wrote.
- Promises of a fixed number of reviews each month.
